Summer Breeze

If I could do anything this summer I would travel faraway. I would walk barefoot through the sand and stay in a beautiful city house where I could sit atop the roof at night and let the warm wind blow through my hair like a fine toothed comb. I would let the entire world encompass me in its warmth and touch. I would soak in the sun and feel the waves hit my back. Beautiful flowers would grow atop my roof and their scents would trail throughout the air like some kind of fragrant ghost, creating a memory that lasts forever, a smell, a touch, a taste that I can hold wherever I go of that perfect summer.

A man in a Jaguar passed a mini that had broken down by the side of the road. Being a kindly driver, he stopped and fixed a tow-rope to it and began towing it to the nearest garage. After 10 minutes of towing, a Porsche passed them at high speed. The Jaguar driver was not going to be outdone by a Porsche, so, forgetting that he had a mini in tow, slammed his foot down and the Jaguar and Porsche indulged in a high-speed race down the road, the Skoda and it's occupant trailing wildly about at the end of the rope frantically trying to attract their attention and failing. A Police car saw them and gave chase. The Police driver radioed back to Headquarters "Sarge, you'll never believe this, I've just seen a Porsche and a Jaguar neck and neck doing 150 mph - and a bloke in a mini flashing his lights, blowing his horn and trying to overtake them!"



A man in a Porsche 911 stops at a stoplight and a guy on a scooter pulls up next to him. The guy on the scooter leans over and takes an admiring look at the inside of the Porsche and tells the driver that he has a really hot car. Well, the light turned green so the driver of the Porsche decides to show off and peels out and leaves the guy on the scooter in the dust. Then, all of a sudden, he sees the scooter zip on past him. So, being a little cocky, the Porsche driver floors it again and blows past the guy on the scooter. A few seconds later, he again sees the scooter zip on past him. So now he's a little irate as well as a little mifted that that scooter keeps passing him so he floors it until he is going over 100 mph. He thinks to himself that there would be no way that scooter could catch him now, but then looks in the rearview mirror and sees that scooter starting to catch up. He then decides to find out what that scooter really is and slams on his brakes. Then the scooter crashes into the Porsche. After the dust settled, the Porsche driver sees the scooter driver lying in the road and goes over to him and askes how he could go as fast as the Porsche on a little wimpy scooter... It’s fine rather amazing how we’ve come to know each other and eventually become friends. Life has its miracles and knowing you is reason enough to believe in one.

Happiness

We convince ourselves that life will be better once we have graduated from school. Then we get frustrated because we end up unemployed, and that all will be well when we get a job. Then we get frustrated because of low salary- not enough to start a family, and that all will be well when we get promoted or get hired by a high-paying employer.

We think that we have the money to raise a family- so, we get married. Have a kid... and another one.

And another.

Then we get frustrated because our children are not old enough, and that all will be well when they are older. Then we get frustrated because they reach adolescence and we have to put up with them. Surely we'll be happier when they grow out of their teen years.

We tell ourselves all will be better when we have mended ties, bought a house, earned some money, bought things we've been craving for. When we have a nicer car, when we take a vacation.

Truth is, there is no better time to be happy than right now. If not, then when? Our lives will always be full of challenges and obstacles. It is better to admit that life is indeed difficult and to decide to be happy in spite of it all.

Happiness is not a destination.

There is no road to happiness. It IS the road.

Always Changing

Please excuse me if I'm a little pensive today. Mark is leaving, and I'm feeling kind of sad. You probably don't know Mark, but you might be lucky enough to know someone just like him. He's been the heart and soul of the office for a couple of years, combining exemplary professional skills with a sweet nature and gentle disposition. He's never been all that interested in getting credit for the terrific work he does. He just wants to do his job, and to do it superbly well. And now he's moving on to an exciting new professional opportunity. It sounds like it could be the chance of a lifetime, and we're genuinely, sincerely pleased for him. But that doesn't make it any easier to say goodbye to a dear friend and trusted colleague. Life has a way of throwing these curve balls at us. Just when we start to get comfortable with a person, a place or a situation, something comes along to alter the recipe. A terrific neighbor moves away. Someone in the family graduates. A child finds new love and loyalties through marriage. The family's principle bread-winner is laid off. Our ability to cope with change and disruption determines, to a great degree, our peace, happiness and contentment in life. But how do we do that? Philosophers have considered the question for centuries, and their responses have been varied. According to the author of the Biblical book of Ecclesiastes, comfort can be found in remembering that "to every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven." Kahlil Gibran urged his listeners to "let today embrace the past with remembrance, and the future with longing." A friend of mine who works for the government is fond of reminding his fellow bureaucrats that "survivability depends upon adaptability. Of course, some bumps along the road of life are easier to take than others. A rained-out picnic, for example, is easier to cope with than the sudden death of a loved one. But the principle is the same. "Change, indeed, is painful, yet ever needful," said philosopher Thomas Carlyle. "And if memory have its force and worth, so also has hope." We're going to miss Mark, just like you'll miss that graduate, that neighbor or that newlywed. But rather than dwell on the sadness of our parting, we'll focus on our hopes for a brighter future - for him, and for us. And then we'll go out and do everything we can to make that future happen. Until our plans change - again.
